Home and Away in New Zealand: What Time It's On TVNZ 2 and When It Reaches TVNZ+

Home and Away screens in New Zealand on TVNZ 2 from Monday to Thursday in the early evening, streams free on TVNZ+, and runs one week behind Australia: the episode on TVNZ 2 on Monday 28 September is the one Seven showed on Monday 21 September.

That's worth spelling out because the signals online don't agree. The show's TVNZ+ page mentions an 8am release, and older listings still describe a Sunday afternoon block. We went to TVNZ's own TV guide and to Freeview's guide for the week starting Sunday 27 September, and both give the same weeknight slot.

What time is Home and Away on TVNZ 2?

Monday to Thursday at 6.30pm on TVNZ 2, repeated an hour later on TVNZ 2 +1 at 7.30pm.

Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday are half-hour slots that finish at 7pm. Thursday is longer: TVNZ's guide gives it a full hour, 6.30pm to 7.30pm, on both Thursday 24 September and Thursday 1 October.

If you miss the evening showing, TVNZ 2 runs it again at lunchtime the next weekday. Those repeats start at 12pm from Tuesday to Thursday and at 12.05pm on Mondays and Fridays. Friday has no new episode, only Thursday's repeat.

Sunday is different again. On Sunday 27 September TVNZ 2 has Home and Away from 11.15am to 1.50pm, a long late-morning block rather than the 3.30pm start some older pages mention. On Freeview, TVNZ 2 is channel 2 and TVNZ 2 +1 is channel 7.

Episode numbers on the New Zealand side come from TVNZ's guide. The Australian dates are Seven's, as listed on TVmaze, and we checked episode 8796 against the Back to the Bay episode archive as well.

How far behind Australia is Home and Away in NZ?

Seven days, in the fortnight we checked. Every New Zealand weeknight in the table lines up with the same weekday one week earlier in Australia, where Seven airs Home and Away Monday to Thursday at 7pm.

Counted in episodes, the gap looks bigger. When episode 8796 goes out here on Monday 28 September, Australia will be showing episode 8802 that same night. That's because Seven's listings on TVmaze put three episodes under some Thursdays, 24 September among them, so Australia moves through the story faster in some weeks.

Seven's 7pm in Sydney lands at 10pm in New Zealand this week, while we're on daylight time and New South Wales isn't yet. From Monday 5 October it's 9pm NZDT. That's when Australian viewers start talking about the episode you won't see until the following week.

Can you stream Home and Away free on TVNZ+?

Yes. TVNZ+ carries it as an ad-supported title at no charge, and TVNZ+ asks viewers to sign in with a TVNZ+ account before watching.

The streaming side is where the 8am comes from. The label on the TVNZ+ show page reads "New episodes Monday - Thursday 8am", which suggests each new episode reaches the app in the morning, well ahead of the 6.30pm broadcast. We haven't timed an individual upload, so take that as TVNZ's own label, not something we've tested.

Don't expect decades of old episodes. As of Saturday 26 September, TVNZ's catalogue lists 145 episodes across two seasons, so the app is for keeping up rather than going back to the start. If you're out at 6.30pm, the lunchtime repeat or the app will catch you up.

Why do some listings say Sunday afternoons?

Because TVNZ's scheduling has moved around. Wikipedia's New Zealand section describes a Sunday run from 3.30pm to 6pm with repeats at 11am each weekday, but it doesn't date that arrangement, and it doesn't match what TVNZ is publishing for the coming week.

The current pattern is first-run episodes on weeknights at 6.30pm, repeats at lunchtime and on TVNZ 2 +1, and a Sunday block that sits in the late morning. The slot has moved before, so the TVNZ 2 guide on the day is the final word.
