Freeview vs Sky in New Zealand: What Each Costs, What You Get and Which You Need

Most New Zealand households need only Freeview, which costs nothing and carries TVNZ 1, TVNZ 2, Three and the other free-to-air channels, while Sky's cheapest package, Sky Starter, is NZ$25.99 a month on a 12-month contract. You need Sky mainly if you want live All Blacks and Warriors matches, Sky's own entertainment and movie channels, or everything in one box.

The line between the two is blurrier than it used to be. Sky is one of the four partners that run Freeview, it has owned Three since 1 August 2025, and its free channel Sky Open sits on the Freeview line-up. So a lot of what people think of as "Sky" is already on free-to-air.

What is the difference between Freeview and Sky?

Freeview is New Zealand's free-to-air platform. There's no subscription: you pick the signal up with a UHF aerial, a satellite dish or the Freeview Streaming TV app, and the channels pay for themselves with ads. It's a joint venture between TVNZ, RNZ, Whakaata Māori and Sky.

Sky is pay TV. You pay monthly for packages of channels, delivered either by satellite to a Sky Box or over the internet to a Sky Pod, and you sign a contract to get the introductory prices.

What channels do you get on Freeview?

All the big nationwide ones. The core line-up is TVNZ 1, TVNZ 2, Three, Bravo, Whakaata Māori and Sky Open, which were the old analogue channels, plus digital-only channels including Duke, Eden, Rush, HGTV and Al Jazeera. Several have +1 timeshift versions, and Te Reo is streaming-only.

That covers most of the local shows people actually search for. Taskmaster NZ Season 7 is on TVNZ 2 and TVNZ+ on Monday and Tuesday nights, with the final on Tuesday 13 October. Home and Away is on TVNZ 2, and Three is the home of The Traitors NZ.

How do you get Freeview?

Three ways, and none of them costs a subscription:

• UHF aerial. Plug any TV with a built-in tuner into a rooftop aerial. The terrestrial signal reaches around 86% of the population, mainly the cities and bigger provincial towns, and it uses no internet data.
• Satellite dish. Covers the whole of mainland New Zealand and the main offshore islands, so it's the rural option. Unless your TV has a satellite tuner, you'll need a Freeview satellite box.
• Freeview Streaming TV app. Live channels over your broadband on a smart TV, with no aerial. For an older TV, Freeview points you to its SmartVU dongle or SmartVU+ box.

If you want to pause and record, a Freeview recorder does it without any ongoing fee. And for catching up rather than watching live, TVNZ+ and ThreeNow cost nothing, both paid for by ads.

How much does Sky cost in New Zealand?

Sky Starter is NZ$25.99 a month on a 12-month contract, and it's the base every other package sits on. It includes entertainment and reality channels, kids' shows, food and lifestyle, news and the free-to-air channels.

Here's what Sky's offers page listed when we checked on Sunday 27 September 2026. The deal prices last 12 months, then standard prices apply, and the offers end on 30 November 2026.

By our maths, the cheapest possible year on Sky is $311.88, which is Starter alone for the 12 contracted months. Starter plus Sky Sport costs $780 in the first year on the deal, against $935.88 at the standard price, so the offer saves $155.88 before it runs out. After that, you're on $77.99 a month unless you renegotiate.

Sky's offers page doesn't list separate prices for the Sky Box or Sky Pod, so check what applies to your plan when you sign up.

Do you need Sky to watch the All Blacks?

For live, full coverage, yes. Sky's own pitch leads with "exclusive access to the All Blacks, Warriors", and that sits in Sky Sport, which means Starter plus Sport at the least.

That's the single biggest reason New Zealand households keep Sky. If you don't follow rugby or league closely, it's a lot to pay for a handful of matches, and Freeview plus a streaming service or two will usually cover the rest.

Is Sky worth it if you already have Netflix?

Only if sport or Sky's own channels matter to you. Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max and Prime Video cover most big drama and film, and HBO shows have moved off Neon to HBO Max NZ since 15 June 2026.

Sky's answer is to put your streamers in the same box: its offers page describes flicking between Sky and your favourite streaming apps in one place. Which one do you need?

A quick way to decide:

• Freeview only if you watch the main channels, local reality and the news, and stream anything else. It costs nothing each month.
• Freeview plus one or two streamers if you want big dramas and films without a contract.
• Sky if live rugby or league is non-negotiable, or someone in the house lives on Sky's entertainment and movie channels.

Australian reality is the grey area. Past seasons of The Block Australia screened on Three and ThreeNow, both free, but the NZ channel and start date for the 2026 season are not yet confirmed. Freeview vs Sky: common questions

Can I get Freeview without an aerial?
Yes. The Freeview Streaming TV app runs on many smart TVs over broadband, and a satellite dish works anywhere on the mainland.

Is Three still free now that Sky owns it?
Yes. Three is on Freeview and ThreeNow is still an ad-supported free service, run by Sky's free-to-air business.

Can I cancel Sky early?
The current offers are on 12-month contracts and Sky says exit fees apply, so check the terms before you sign.
