Harry Potter Series in New Zealand: Release Date, HBO Max and Where to Watch
Our own illustration. The series premieres worldwide on HBO Max; the New Zealand time is still to come.

Updated 4 November: We re-checked on Wednesday 4 November: the premiere is still dated Friday 25 December 2026, and neither TVmaze nor Wikipedia gives a New Zealand time, so that detail is still open.

The HBO Harry Potter series will stream in New Zealand on HBO Max, the service that launched here on 16 June 2026, with the worldwide premiere set for Friday 25 December 2026; the New Zealand release time is not yet confirmed as of Wednesday 4 November. It won't be on free-to-air TV, TVNZ+ or ThreeNow, and it won't be on Neon, which lost its HBO shows in June.

Season one is Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, told over eight episodes. It's meant to be the start of a long run: Wikipedia reports HBO has planned for around ten years of production.

When does the Harry Potter series come out in NZ?

Most likely Saturday 26 December, but no New Zealand time has been announced. HBO has dated the premiere to 25 December for HBO in the US and HBO Max around the world. What it hasn't published is a clock time, and that's the detail that decides the New Zealand day.

Here's why. In December, New Zealand runs 18 hours ahead of the US east coast. A premiere at 9pm on Christmas night in New York would land at 3pm NZDT on Saturday 26 December here, in the middle of Boxing Day. That's our calculation from the time difference, not an announcement, and HBO Max NZ hasn't posted a local listing yet.

How the other seven episodes follow the premiere hasn't been set out in any source we checked, so we've left that row open.

Where can I watch the Harry Potter series in New Zealand?

On HBO Max. RNZ's report on the New Zealand launch named the Harry Potter series among the shows coming to the service in 2026, and the premiere is listed for HBO Max globally, not as a US-only date.

You can sign up to HBO Max directly or add it as a channel inside Prime Video, an option it has offered here since the June launch. Either way the programme is the same. The one place it won't turn up is Neon: Sky's service carried HBO in New Zealand for years, but those shows moved across when HBO Max arrived on 16 June.

That also rules out Sky's linear channels, as far as anything announced so far goes. Nothing from Sky, TVNZ or Three suggests a broadcast run.

How much does HBO Max cost in NZ?

Two plans, going by HBO Max's own New Zealand price page when we checked it on 24 September. Standard is NZ$15.99 a month or NZ$159.99 a year, with two streams at once in Full HD. Premium is NZ$20.99 a month or NZ$209.99 a year, with four streams and 4K.

If you only want it for the Christmas premiere, one month of Standard covers episode one. Whether it covers all eight depends on a release pattern nobody has announced. Our NZ streaming price comparison puts HBO Max beside Netflix, Disney+, Neon and Prime Video, including what two services together cost.

Harry Potter series in New Zealand: what is confirmed and what is not
The date is set for the US. The New Zealand time is still open.

Who is in the Harry Potter series cast?

Three newcomers lead it. Dominic McLaughlin plays Harry, Arabella Stanton plays Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout plays Ron Weasley.

The adults are better known. John Lithgow is Albus Dumbledore, Paapa Essiedu is Severus Snape, Janet McTeer is Minerva McGonagall and Nick Frost is Rubeus Hagrid. Luke Thallon plays Quirrell, and Daniel Rigby and Bel Powley are Vernon and Petunia Dursley.

Francesca Gardiner is the showrunner and Mark Mylod directs, with Jessica Hobbs, Lucy Forbes and Benjamin Caron also behind the camera. Filming began on 14 July 2025 at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in Hertfordshire.

Is it the same story as the films?

Yes, from the start. Season one adapts the first book, and TV Guide's coverage quotes the production as telling the original story, with no prequels or side stories folded in. The difference is room: eight episodes for one book, where the 2001 film had about two and a half hours.

The first full trailer, released on 25 March, became the most-watched trailer in HBO and HBO Max history, with 277 million views in its first 48 hours, according to Wikipedia's summary of HBO's figures.

What else is streaming in NZ before Christmas?

Plenty to get through first. October's arrivals are in our lists for Netflix NZ, Prime Video NZ and Disney+ NZ, and the rest of our streaming coverage sits under Streaming NZ.

If you're weighing up a paid service against free TV for the summer holidays, Freeview vs Sky covers what you get for nothing. On free-to-air before then, Taskmaster NZ's Season 7 final aired on TVNZ 2 on Tuesday 13 October; every past champion is here.
