Shortland Street 2027 Return Date: Now 4 Nights a Week

Shortland Street is moving from three new episodes a week to four, starting in February 2027. The extra night airs on TVNZ 2 and streams free on TVNZ+, alongside the current Monday-to-Wednesday 7pm slot that's been the show's pattern since 2025.
Updated 1 October: corrected when the three-night week began. It dates from 2025, after TVNZ announced the cut from five nights in July 2024.
The expansion is backed by $2.3 million from NZ On Air's Round Tahi funding round — money that, TVNZ says, is what makes the fourth episode possible after the show was scaled back to three nights in 2025.
What does Shortland Street's schedule look like right now?
As things stand, new episodes air Monday to Wednesday at 7pm on TVNZ 2, with each one also landing on TVNZ+ the same day for anyone who misses the broadcast slot. Thursday and Friday currently carry no new episode, which is the gap the fourth night is meant to fill once TVNZ locks in a day and a February 2027 date.
That three-night pattern has been the show's rhythm since the start of 2025, after TVNZ said in July 2024 that it was trimming Shortland Street back from a five-night soap. The Round Tahi funding doesn't restore that original five-night run — it adds one night back, taking the show to four.
What hasn't been confirmed yet?
Which night of the week the new episode lands on, and the exact February date it starts — TVNZ hasn't published either as of Sunday 4 October. Both RNZ and 1News, who broke the story in early August, reported the change without a specific date, and neither has followed up with one since. We'll update this page as soon as TVNZ does.

Why the extra night, and why now?
Shortland Street is one of New Zealand's longest-running local dramas, and its funding has been under public scrutiny before — TVNZ said in 2024 that the show's future was under review. The Round Tahi grant reverses that direction instead of winding the show down, which is why the announcement was framed as a reprieve as much as an expansion.
No cast additions tied specifically to the fourth episode have been announced yet. When TVNZ names new characters for the expanded schedule, we'll add them here.
Who is leaving Shortland Street?
Two long-running cast members are on their way out ahead of the schedule change. Ben Barrington, who has played Dr Drew McCaskill since 2015, confirmed in July 2026 that leaving "wasn't his decision," ending an on-screen run of nearly 11 years (NZ Herald, Newstalk ZB).
Ria Vandervis, who plays Drew's on-screen wife Harper Whitley, is also departing. The pair's characters married, fostered and later adopted a child together across their years on the show, which made McCaskill and Whitley one of Ferndale's more settled couples — their joint exit removes both halves of that household at once.
Neither actor's on-screen send-off date has been confirmed publicly. We'll update this section once Drew and Harper's final episodes are announced.

Shortland Street isn't the only local show building out its 2027 season — Taskmaster NZ's season-by-season winners and The Traitors NZ's prize history cover New Zealand's other returning competition shows, and Home and Away in NZ and The Block Australia in NZ track the Australian imports on the same channels.
FAQ
When does Shortland Street move to four nights a week? TVNZ has confirmed February 2027 as the start month, without a specific date or the new night of the week yet.
Is the extra episode free to watch? Yes. Like the current three nights, the fourth is set to air on TVNZ 2 and stream on TVNZ+, both of which are free.
Who is leaving the show, and when? Ben Barrington (Dr Drew McCaskill) and Ria Vandervis (Harper Whitley) are both departing; neither actor's final on-screen episode date has been made public yet.
Is the fourth night part of a bigger revamp? Not based on what's been announced. TVNZ and NZ On Air have framed the $2.3 million Round Tahi grant as funding one additional episode, not a wider format change.
